Great hornbill survives cancer with 3D-printed beak

STORY: This bird survived cancer thanks to a 3D-printed beak

Location: Tampa, Florida

The bird, known as Crescent, is a great hornbill

Veterinarians at ZooTampa replaced Crescent's beak

after noticing a cancerous tumor on her casque

A private biomedical 3D laboratory designed the custom casque

as well as a 3D-printed surgical guide

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN AT ZOO TAMPA, KENDRA BAKER, SAYING: "So, you can see that it has little screw holes here, and we attached it to her casque, just like that, and we put dental acrylic to seal the edges, and then we screwed everything into place. So, yes, all those - the 3D printing is a 100 percent accurate replica of what Crescent's casque and skull looks like."
