STORY: Chuck emerged from his log cabin at dawn to cries of “Wake up Chuck!”
The groundhog did not see his shadow, according to the Zoo’s Executive Director Ken Mitchell, and State Island Borough President’s Office Senior Advisor, Ed Burke, meaning spring is six weeks away.
Local officials unfurled a banner that read “Spring is coming!”
“I am very happy with Chuck's prediction. Chuck did predict early spring,” said Jessica Hartmann, director of education at the Staten Island Zoo. “He's got an 80% accuracy rate, which is tops among groundhogs. It's actually the top out of any predicting groundhog. So, I think we're in for some warm weather.”
This is Chuck’s 42nd year making the annual prediction of when winter will end.
