Residents in Rio slums endure winter heatwave

STORY: In the Parque Esperanca slum, residents gathered in a swimming pool to beat the heat in Rio, where mercury was expected to hit 38 degrees Celsius (104F) on Sunday, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

A resident from the Rocinha slum, Maria Beatriz Gomes, said they suffered from these kind of extreme weather events the most because of crammed dwellings which lacked any kind of climate monitoring.

The Inmet this week issued a red alert in different regions of Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, to warn of the dangers of temperatures climbing well over 5 degrees Celsius (41F) above the average in the last week of winter.

The ongoing heatwave is forecast to last until September 26.
