Robo-chef serves up favorites in Croatian kitchen

STORY: Will it be lamb gnocchi or zucchini pasta for lunch?

At this Croatian restaurant a robot chef will make up to 70 different dishes for you.

The owners of BOTS&POTS in Zagreb say it’s the only restaurant in the world where one pot ready-to-eat meals are made by robots.

"As far as we know, there is no robot that can make a finished dish from scratch, in one pot.”

Restaurant co-owner Hrvoje Bujas says it took seven years and over $1 million to turn the idea into a reality.

”The challenge was really to make a finished dish from raw food in as few minutes as possible, and to make it as tasty as possible. The process itself took a long time, a lot of money was invested, we are talking about more than a million euros. That's a lot of work, a lot of enthusiasm.”

The robotic chef is called GammaChef.

The only time a human is involved in the cooking process is when it comes to loading the device with fresh ingredients.

"Our head chef in Split, in our showroom, practically teaches a robot how to cook a dish. Once he's been taught, the robot remembers it and then it can repeat it, it can repeat it a billion times. We now have some 70 dishes ready."

‘’Right now, each robot can make four meals in 15 minutes.”

So, is there any difference in taste?

"I’m here for first time – I brought my friend here for his birthday. With food, it makes no difference whether it is made by a human or a robot - the food is great. I didn't leave anything on the plate.”

Bujas says using robots not only speeds up the cooking process but also saves money at a time of staff shortages.

He said the restaurant is currently considering expanding the business model via franchises.
