Thousands gather at al-Aqsa mosque for Laylat al-Qadr

STORY: Prayers on this religious occasion have a special significance for Muslims, who believe that on this night, God grants the wishes of the faithful and also considers their devotion equivalent to praying for 1,000 months.

The worshipers crowded the narrow lanes leading to the mosque in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem, home to the third holiest shrine to Muslims, known to Jews as Temple Mount.

There were differing estimates of the number of worshippers, with the Israeli police putting the number at 130,000, while the Waqf, the Jordanian-appointed Islamic organization that manages the complex, placed the number at 280,000.
