UK releases new 50p coin to mark Charles' coronation

STORY: Post offices and banks will receive 5 million pieces of the new coin which features a profile of Charles and Westminster Abbey, the site of his coronation.

Mark Loveridge, Director of UK currency at the Royal Mint, said the design is to "celebrate his majesty the king's coronation and in a nod to the location, at Westminster Abbey and the cypher, the king's official cypher on the coin.''

It is the second coin in circulation that Charles appears on, with the first being released in December 2022 to mark his ascension to the throne after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth.

Charles appears uncrowned on the coin in keeping with tradition that only female monarchs appear wearing crowns.
