The aircraft was carrying troops bound for counter-insurgency operations when it crashed on Sunday (July 4) with 96 aboard, killing 53. Among the dead were three civilians on the ground and the rest of the crew were injured.

Sergeant Abud Asmawil, who has been regularly riding military planes for more than 20 years, suffered burns, fractures and wounds after being tossed out of the aircraft when its tail fell off.

Private Benjamin Obod, who also had similar injuries, said the pain he felt could not compare to those who have died.

"We love our troops, even in difficult times, we will never forget them. They are like our family," he said.
