Rome's Spanish Steps go from green to full bloom

In only a matter of weeks the plants have turned from green to a spectacular display of fuchsia and white.

In 2020 the floral display did not take place as Italy suffered the terrible impact of being one of the first countries in Europe to be hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

But this year at the beginning of April, some 250 white and fuchsia azaleas were placed from the bottom of the steps up to the church of the Trinita de' Monti.

The tradition dates back to 1952.

The duration of the bloom depends upon the weather but once the flowers begin to die away again, the plants are scooped up and taken back to the garden centre where they are curated until the following year.
