STORY: Thomas Bach: “The International Olympic Committee has the honor to announce that the 27th Olympic Winter Games 2034 are awarded to Salt Lake City, Utah.”

After earning 83 out of a possible 89 “yes” votes from the IOC Wednesday, Salt Lake City was officially named the host of the 2034 Winter Olympic Games, the first time the U.S. city has done so since 2002.

“I think all of us are just feeling grateful for the opportunity to have these games come back to Utah…”

Chief of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, Catherine Raney Norman:

“In the moment, it's gratitude, it's joy and it's celebratory. And as we look towards the future and bringing the world back, we are just, we're so excited for this…We're taking the time to celebrate right now. But as we look to the ten years, they're going to go quickly. They really are. And we know that we have to be intentional, impactful as we do this process."

Cheers erupted in Salt Lake City in the early morning hours as the announcement was made.

SALT LAKE CITY RESIDENT, RACHELLE MORRIS: "What I'm looking forward to is just that the world gets to see Salt Lake on a global stage again…”

SALT LAKE CITY RESIDENT, MATTHEW WATSON: “I was six months old when the last Games happened. Even though I wasn't remembering those, I feel like it was such a big part of my life.”

Before Wednesday’s announcement, Salt Lake City’s bid had hit an unexpected hurdle after U.S. authorities launched an investigation into alleged doping by Chinese swimmers ahead of the Tokyo Games.

The move angered the IOC after the World Anti-Doping Agency did not find any wrongdoing in its own investigation.

An amendment was later added by the IOC to the host city contract addressing the issue, that Salt Lake City and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee signed.

WADA later told Reuters that it will take the United States Anti-Doping Agency to the Independent Compliance Review Committee over its handling of the Chinese swimming case, a landmark move that could jeopardize the country hosting the 2028 and 2034 Olympics.
