Sirens blared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, late on Tuesday, September 26, as the city’s police responded to multiple reports of looting in the Center City area.

According to local news reports, at least 20 people were arrested in connection with the looting by Wednesday afternoon.

Acting police commissioner John Stanford said Tuesday night’s looting was unrelated to an earlier protest held after charges were dismissed against an officer who shot and killed a man during a traffic stop in August.

“What we had tonight was a bunch of criminal opportunists take advantage of a situation and making an attempt to destroy our city,” Stanford said, according to ABC6.

On Wednesday morning, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney thanked police for their “swift response” to Tuesday night’s “criminal activity.”
