Snow blankets trees in Belgium amid cold snap

STORY: Trees and fields around the country's highest peak at the Signal de Botrange, an altitude of 694 meters (2276 feet), were dusted white on Tuesday, with a local hiker saying she had noticed the change in climate recently.

Earlier in the season, high temperature records were broken in Europe from Switzerland to Hungary, which registered its warmest Christmas Eve in Budapest.

Belgium saw its warmest ever New Year's Eve on record with an overnight low of 13.4 degrees Celsius (56.12 degrees Fahrenheit) according to the Belgian Meteorological Office.

But the most recent cold snap has brought snow, and temperatures were set to stick below freezing overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday (January 18).
