STORY: South Africa's path to freedom was long and thousands of young people, freedom fighters and activists lost their lives during the struggle for liberation from white minority rule.

During the celebrations at the Union Buildings, Ramaphosa was flanked by ministers from the ruling African National Congress party, which has been in power since 1994 when apartheid ended.

Ramaphosa told attendees that the victory against apartheid was one of the "greatest feats in modern history."
