China prepares for Asian Games amid economic concerns

STORY: China is gearing up to host the 19th Asian Games

Like an Olympics for Asian countries, the games are typically held every four years

But with China’s economy in a downswing, feelings about the event are mixed

“As a common person, it would be better if this money is spent on the common people and on the youngsters.”

Organizers haven't disclosed spending for the games

But Hangzhou said more than $30 billion was spent from 2015 to 2020 on relevant facilities

“So the market is here, but again, it's a little bit of a balance because the domestic policy makers have some other priorities with the economy and so on at the moment, they don't quite have that political incentive that they did (have) with the Olympics. But I think it's always good to have sporting events from the economy's point of view, as well as some other benefits, too.”

The games will run from September 23 to October 8

Around 12,500 athletes will compete across 40 sports
