The Mexican Meteorological Service forecast winds of 110 km/h, and torrential rains of between about 6 and 10 inches in Quintana Roo.

Helene is expected to barrel north to Cuba and Florida and reach category 3 on Thursday (September 26), according to the SMN.

Climate scientists say Florida's annual hurricanes have grown more frequent and severe due to global warming.
