Parts of southern and central Arizona were left flooded on Tuesday, September 24, after storm Lorena brought heavy rainfall to the region, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Lorena made landfall near La Ventana, Mexico, on September 20 as a Category 1 hurricane, and later weakened to a tropical storm and then a tropical depression, according to the NWS.

Local media reported Lorena brought “widespread rain and flooding” to the Phoenix area, spawning a “rare” tornado and leaving drivers stranded in floodwater.

The NWS issued a flood advisory for Maricopa County, which includes Scottsdale, on Tuesday. The advisory warned of “minor flooding” in low-lying areas.
