NYPD Officer Surprised by Marriage Proposal at Police Commissioner's Office

A member of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) was surprised with a marriage proposal as she visited the office of NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea on November 10 under the pretense of receiving an award, Shea said.

Footage of the moment was posted on Shea’s Twitter account with the caption: “When you think you’re going to the [Commissioner’s] office to receive an award, but you leave with a diamond ring.”

In the video, Shea tells Shaundel, who works in the NYPD’s License Division, that he usually gives cufflinks to police officers, but says “that would be a waste of time” in her case. Instead, he hands her a jewelry box that Shea said had a “diamond ring” inside. As Shea passes Shaundel the ring, Shaundel’s boyfriend Henry, a retired NYPD sergeant, sneaks in behind her and gets down on one knee.

After pausing a moment as she examines the contents of the box, Shaundel’s eyes and mouth widen with surprise, and she turns to find Henry asking for her hand in marriage. The pair hug and those in the room break into applause.

“She said Yes!” Shea tweeted. Credit: Commissioner Shea via Storyful
