Student protesters in Saint-Etienne, France, who oppose government education reform to make university admissions more selective, prompted a police response and faced tear gas on Monday, December 10, as they blocked streets and disrupted traffic.

As many as 100 students gathered at Lycée Claude-Fauriel to demonstrate, and marched towards the city center of Saint-Etienne, a local report said. Security forces fired tear gas in several instances, effectively dispersing the group. Videos recorded at the demonstrations show students attempting to light small fires and running as tear gas is fired.

Monday’s protests appeared muted after a weekend marked by nationwide mobilization and violence. Thousands of arrests were reported in the “Yellow Vests” protests. Credit: lycéen stephanois via Storyful
