Hundreds of young climate activists demonstrated at the offices of Democratic congressional leaders in Washington on December 10, calling on them and other Democrats to back the so-called Green New Deal.

The deal aims to drastically cut carbon emissions and is being championed by Representative-Elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, among others.

Protesters from the Sunrise Movement visited the offices of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, and Rep. Jim McGovern, and held signs reading, “Back the deal,” “No more excuses,” and “We need the green new deal.” The group tweeted that McGovern told them he was committed to a Select Committee on a Green New Deal.

Hoyer tweeted that he had welcomed members of the Sunrise Movement to his office, and pledged to take action: “I’m happy to hear from them about one of the most pressing issues of our time. Speaking out is exactly what our democracy is all about, and I appreciate their passion. The new Dem Majority will #ActonClimate.”
