The waters off Jervis Bay, New South Wales, glowed with bioluminescent algae on July 11, with one group of friends making the most of the phenomenon by wading in the surf and exploring the bay in a boat.

Emma Horan was among the group, and posted footage of the dazzling phenomenon on Instagram.

Horan told Storyful she drove from her home in Sydney to Jervis Bay, along Australia’s southeast coast, when her friend revealed that the water was beginning to change color.

“It was some of the most vibrant luminescence any of us had ever seen,” Horan said.

“We took the boat over to some more secluded beaches, where we came across a major hot spot of luminescence,” Horan said. Credit: Emma Horan via Storyful
