Blowing Lake-Effect Snow Reduces Visibility in Western New York

Heavy lake-effect snow was moving over western New York near Buffalo on Wednesday, December 11, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

One to two inches of snow was forecast to fall per hour, the NWS said. In a winter weather advisory, the weather service projected a total of three to six inches of snowfall in the area. Forecasters said wind gusts up to 40 mph and consequent blowing snow could make visibility “very poor.”

This video chronicles Wednesday morning’s snowfall in West Seneca, a town near Buffalo in western New York.

The video shows a band of lake-effect snow falling and coating the ground around 7.15 am. It later shows wind whipping snow off the ground and into the air as gusts build up. Footage from the afternoon shows reduced visibility caused by blowing snow. Credit: @JamesSperduti via Storyful
