Over 150 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and three deaths have been recorded in Italy as the country stepped up efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19, local media reported.

Italy has imposed strict quarantine restrictions in two northern regions close to Milan and Venice.

Italian officials also cut short the Venice Carnival as they tried to control what is now the worst outbreak of the coronavirus in Europe.

Authorities in the Veneto region said the event would end later on Sunday, two days earlier than scheduled.

Angelo Borrelli, the head of the country’s civil protection service, said on February 23 that “patient zero” had not yet been identified. He said the Italian army was making emergency beds available and 500 police officers were being deployed to guard quarantined areas. Credit: @alessinaciliegina via Storyful
