Candles Spell Out 'I Can't Breathe' at Brisbane Protest Over Deaths in Police Custody

A candlelight vigil was held at Musgrave Park in Brisbane, Australia, on June 3, to commemorate the deaths of indigenous Australians in police custody and the death of George Floyd in the US.

Some 434 candles spelled out the words “I can’t breathe,” lighting up a large section of the park.

Each candle represented an indigenous Australian except one lit in solidarity with George Floyd, whose death sparked demonstrations worldwide, according to a host on Brisbane’s 98.9FM. Credit: National Indigenous Television (NITV) via Storyful
