Chicago Aquarium Closes, Launches Virtual Experiences, as Covid Restrictions Increase

Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium announced it would voluntarily close from November 18 through the new year to “align with city and statewide COVID-19 mitigation effort,” but would continue to produce virtual content for its audience.

The aquarium launched an online virtual penguin encounter to allow people to enjoy the animals while the closure remained in place, and shared footage on November 18 showing two of its penguins, Wellington and Diego, enjoying a waterfall.

During its closure earlier in 2020 year, the aquarium’s penguins became online celebrities after footage showed them going on “field trips” and visiting other animals.

On Tuesday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced new restrictions, limiting capacity at retail shops and shutting down museums and other indoor entertainment venues. Credit: Shedd Aquarium via Storyful
