Climbers Rescue Lost Dog From Cave in Missouri

Spelunkers rescued a lost dog from a cave in Perry County, Missouri, on Saturday, August 6, according to rescuer Rick Haley.

Haley said a group of cave explorers made an unexpected discovery when they found a dog. They later learned that the dog was 13-year-old Abby, who had been missing from her owner for almost two months, according to local news reports.

Haley said that he and Gerry Keene facilitated the rescue by moving “her 500 feet to a very tight, awkward, vertical climb, handing her hand-to-hand upward to the surface.” The dog was “not in good shape,” but was “cooperative” with rescuers, according to Haley.

Video posted by Rick Haley, which he said was taken on Saturday in Perry County, shows the dog sitting in the duffel bag used to rescue her. Haley said both the dog and her owner were happy to be reunited.
