Commuters using the metro system in Guangzhou, China, were screened for symptoms of the coronavirus on January 23, as health authorities worked to contain an outbreak that has killed 17 people and sickened more than 600 others.

Authorities have been conducting active case finding in all provinces by checking temperatures in public places and installing infrared monitors at major transport hubs.

In a further attempt to curb the spread of the virus, the city of Wuhan, where the virus originated, has announced travel restrictions, according to reports, canceling airline, train, subway, ferry, and bus service in the city, and canceled its Lunar New Year celebrations.

The virus has now been reported in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the US. Credit: Anonymous via Storyful
