The Canadian Coast Guard said a fire aboard a container ship near Victoria, British Columbia, was stabilized on Sunday, October 24.

A total of 16 people were evacuated from the vessel after a fire broke out in at least 10 containers on Saturday, according to officials.

The coast guard said chemicals on board were burned in the fire, and measures were being taken to contain any runoff. Smoke coming from the vessel was being tracked from air-quality monitoring stations, they said.

The ship, the Zim Kingston, was en route to Vancouver, according to marine tracking information, when the fire started. Credit: Canadian Coast Guard via Storyful
