People demonstrating in support of the ongoing anti-government protests in Cuba blocked the Palmetto Expressway in Miami, Florida, for hours on Tuesday, July 13, according to local reports.

The protests in Cuba began on July 11 in response to the country’s handling of COVID-19 and economic hardships exacerbated by the pandemic.

The Florida Highway Patrol announced the expressway, State Road 826, was shut down at SW 24th Street on Tuesday due to the protest.

At approximately 3 pm local time Miami-Dade police tweeted that the “obstruction of roadways is unacceptable and illegal,” but police units on the scene did not declare the protest unlawful or remove protesters from the road for several hours, reports said.
