Ducklings Hatched in Courtyard of Massachusetts Middle School Venture Through Its Corridors

An adorable annual ritual at a middle school in Reading, Massachusetts, was observed recently, as a mother duck and the flock of ducklings she’d hatched in the courtyard over the May 1-2 weekend were guided out of the building.

Video filmed by Ann Jacobsmeier, a sixth-grade history teacher at Arthur W Coolidge Middle School, shows the mother leading her 12 babies down the hallway with the support of school employees.

“The duck laid her eggs in the courtyard and hatched this weekend,” Jacobsmeier told Storyful. “They were walked out through the halls as some of the kids watched from the classroom windows.”

The school wrote in a tweet in May 2018, “Each year a mother duck lays eggs in our courtyard, which has no food or water …. We then allow them passage through the building and into nature.”

On May 3, 2021, the school wrote on Twitter, “The tradition continues.” Credit: Ann Jacobsmeier via Storyful
