Evacuations Ordered as Mesquite Heat Fire Grows in Central Texas

A fast-moving wildfire grew to 5,000 acres in Taylor County, Texas, by Thursday, May 19, as mandatory evacuations were issued in the area.

According to official fire reports, the Mesquite Heat fire grew to 5,000 acres and was 5 percent contained by Thursday morning, after fire crews battled dry and windy conditions and “extreme fire behavior” on Wednesday, local media said.

This footage, captured by Allyson Money-Willis, shows smoke clouds in the distance as she walked near her home in Abilene on Wednesday evening. “You can see the smoke. Very sad.” she said.
