Evacuations were ordered and trains were rerouted after a 500-kilogram bomb from World War II was found during construction work in the Berlin neighborhood of Friedrichshain on Thursday, August 18, according to police.

The device was identified as an aerial bomb with two detonators that specialists were going to remove on site before transferring the defused bomb a site in Grunewald which, since 1950, has been used for controlled detonations of ammunition and unexploded ordinances.

Berlin police released two photos showing the bomb at the construction site, and a graphic image depicting an evacuation area with a 500-meter diameter.

It would take approximately three hours to defuse the bomb, police said. Credit: Polizei Berlin Einsatz via Storyful
