“Flash” the koala showed strong signs of recovery, on November 18, after being severely burnt in the Hillville bushfire near Taree, on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.

“He’s one of three koalas that have been transferred to us from the overwhelmed care group Koalas in Care, Taree” a carer at Port Stephens Koalas posted on Facebook.

“Flash was in care with them for one day before he came to us last Thursday. He’s extremely emaciated, his hands, feet, nose and ears are burnt. He’s improving daily and after day four he gained a kilo in weight.”

Carers at Port Stephens Koalas said the marsupial’s treatment spans across most of the day.

The Hillville fire was one of 55 fires burning across New South Wales as the state battled ”catastrophic” fire conditions on November 12 with a state of emergency declared for large portions of the east coast.

Port Stephens Koalas said they rely heavily on the kindness of strangers to keep their facility running: “We’ve been overwhelmed with donations of items to help our burns victims and we thank each and every one of you. If you wish to help these poor koalas, please donate through our website as every dollar you send will be targeted directly at treating these poor animals.” Credit: Port Stephens Koalas via Storyful
