Friendly Kingfisher Lands on Fisherman's Rod

A friendly kingfisher perched itself on top of a man’s rod while he was out fishing for pike on the River Wye in Hereford, England.

Footage filmed by Lee Harper-Smith shows the moment the colorful bird arrived.

“Hello,” he can be heard greeting his new feathered friend.

Harper-Smith told Storyful that pike are “big fish” but “quite wary of sudden movements or shadows over the water” so he was sitting still and low while fishing when the encounter occurred.

According to Harper-Smith, the bird was looking at “a small shoal of fry” but then repositioned back in the undergrowth.

“He then plunged into the water and flew off with his lunch,” Harper-Smith said. “He caught more than me but what truly great encounter and the reason I enjoy fishing so much, gets you close to nature!” Credit: Lee Harper-Smith via Storyful
