Israel Border Police officers were sent to the city of Lod on Wednesday, May 12, after synagogues and dozens of cars were set on fire by Arab Israelis and a Muslim cemetery was torched by Jewish Israelis, Israeli media reported.

Israeli authorities declared a state of emergency in the city, which is home to both Arab and Jewish Israelis, and announced that a curfew would be in effect from 8 pm Wednesday to 4 pm Thursday. During that period, people would be prohibited from being in public areas, residents would be confined to their homes, and no person would be able to enter Lod from outside, police said. Israel Police Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld said “hundreds of border police” officers had been mobilized to enforce the curfew.
