Hurricane Eta Approaches Southwestern Florida Packing 75 MPH Winds

Tropical Storm Eta restrengthened to a Category 1 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico and was forecast to hit the west coast of Florida near Tampa late Wednesday, November 11.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami issued a hurricane watch for counties on the west coast of Florida.

Reports warned of a “life-threatening storm surge” and tropical-storm-force winds by late Wednesday. Eta was reportedly packing 75 mph winds as of 8 am.

This footage captures strong wind affecting Key West on Wednesday morning. The Florida Keys were placed under a wind advisory and a coastal flood statement had been issued, the National Weather Service said.

Eta caused flooding in Miami-Dade and Broward counties on Monday before moving out over warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. Eta was about 170 miles south-southwest of Tampa early Wednesday and was moving at 15 mph, according to the NHC. Credit: Steve Cutterman via Storyful
