Large waves hit Oahu, Hawaii, on January 16, delighting water-sports enthusiasts on Super Swell Saturday. But some Jet Skiers were caught off-guard when they were knocked down by an enormous wave during the event.

Drone pilot Jon Mark Mahannah captured video of the frightening scene as Jet Skiers rode the waves near the outer reefs before a large swell comes in and throws them off their watercraft.

Mahannah wrote in the YouTube caption that some waves were over 35 feet high. “The skis jetted for the horizon only to find themselves looking into the face of a clean-up,” he said.

According to reports, photographer Ryan Moss and professional surfer Cam Richards were riding together when they were hit by the enormous wave, with Moss suffering a fracture in his lower back.

“I did the best I could do to keep us safe during the chaos and things just went wrong. I feel terrible for Ryan, but I know he is in good spirits and will be back stronger and better,” Richards said.

Speaking in an interview, Moss said, “I just remember feeling weightless and it taking a really long time to come down … There was no handle on the ski, so I couldn’t stand up and hold on.”

Moss added, “The entire surf community over here has been insanely supportive. People just offering help or whatever I may need.” Credit: Jon Mark Mahannah via Storyful
