Lava continued to “boil” in the caldera of the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island on Thursday, June 8, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, after they detected an eruption a day earlier.

The activity was confined to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, compared to the more disruptive eruptions of 2018 that happened in populated areas, the Hawaii Emergency Management System (EMA) said.

The USGS warned of potential hazards due to the eruption, including volcanic gas and smog which could cause air quality concerns.

Visitors were flocking to the park to watch the eruption despite the potential hazards, according to park officials who advised visitors to go to the park in the evening to avoid long lines at entry. Credit: USGS via Storyful
