Few places offered a better, if that’s the word, view of the sea conditions off the Irish coast as Storm Barra arrived than the remote Fastnet Lighthouse off County Cork.

This video was recorded at the lighthouse on December 7, and shows the huge swells at sea from the lighthouse’s lantern room.

The video was posted by the Kinsale RNLI, who said it was recorded by lighthouse worker Ronnie O’Driscoll. O’Driscoll was one of four maintenance workers who were at the lighthouse when the storm struck. They told the Irish Times they hoped to get a helicopter back to the mainland on Thursday.

Winds gusting up to 130 km/h (about 80 mph) were forecast along Ireland’s Atlantic coastline on December 7 as Storm Barra crossed the country.

Some 50,000 customers were without power in Ireland by the afternoon, news reports said. Credit: Irish Lights via Storyful
