Footage shot in Birmingham, Alabama, captured lightning flashing through storm clouds ahead of a tornado that tore through the city’s north on Monday, January 25, injuring dozens and killing one.

Many buildings in Fultondale, the suburb hit hardest, were damaged or destroyed, including a hotel.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said on Tuesday that survey crews found “at least High-End EF-2 Tornado Damage (135 mph winds)” in Fultondale.

Alabama Gov Kay Ivey said she spoke with Fultondale Mayor Larry Holcomb and Center Point Mayor Bobby Scott to pledge the state’s support to help affected areas and residents recover. Credit: Richard Jacks via Storyful
