Lightning Strikes in Sydney as Severe Storms Hit

Severe storms hit many parts of southeast Australia on February 18, killing one man in Sydney and leaving thousands without power.

A particularly unstable atmosphere created conditions for severe storms, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

New South Wales Police said a 37-year-old man died from his injuries after he was hit by a gas bottle that became airborne in the storm.

Lightning strikes can be seen in the nighttime skies over the Sydney suburb of Mosman, in this video by photographer Sarah Hulme. It was estimated there were 74,000 strikes within a 100 km radius of Sydney.

“I wanted to wake the kiddies for this late-night storm,” Hulme said in her Instagram post, but instead she settled on making a video for them.
