Looters descended upon stores in Chicago in the early morning hours of Monday, August 10, after clashes with police escalated, ending in over 100 arrests.

Stores downtown were broken into overnight, as looters faced off with and exchanged gunfire with police.

Elizabeth Marie Betson shared these views of a Dr. Martens shoe store and a coffee shop called The Goddess and Grocer, both damaged by the overnight looting. Another photo shows a Warby Parker employee sweeping up the storefront.

Protests ensued overnight following the police shooting of an Englewood man on August 9, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown told local media during a press conference.

More than 100 people were arrested and 13 police officers were injured, reports said.

In response to the unrest, downtown bridges were raised. Bus and train service to the area were temporarily restricted until Monday morning.

“We are waking up in shock this morning,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said during the conference on Monday morning. “It was abject criminal behavior, period. This was straight-up felony criminal conduct.” Credit: Elizabeth Marie Betson via Storyful
