Man Threatens to Call Police After Accusing Black Tenants of Trespassing in Minneapolis

A white man threatened to call police on a group of black entrepreneurs in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after wrongly accusing them of trespassing and not having proper access to a shared gym space.

A video of the incident was posted to Instagram on May 26 by e-commerce consulting business Top Figure showing a man who identified himself as Tom Austin approaching the black entrepreneurs and asking them if they were tenants of the building, which houses work spaces as well as a communal gym.

“I’m Tom Austin, I’m a tenant in the building, are you?” Austin asks the group of men.

After the Top Figure team inform Austin that they are all, in fact, tenants of the building as well, Austin proceeds to ask them what office suite they occupy before taking out his phone and threatening to call 911.

Austin did not end up calling police but instead called the building manager, according to reports.

Eventually a janitorial staff member came to the gym and identified the Top Figure team as being tenants of the building and not a threat.

The Star Tribune reported that Austin’s lease on the building space was terminated after the video went viral on social media. Austin said after the incident that he should have handled things differently and it was “not (his) job to have done anything.” Credit: Top Figure via Storyful
