A paraselene lunar halo, also called a “moon dog” was spotted in the western Minnesota town of Graceville on January 18.

This video, taken by Carol Bauer, shows the captivating phenomenon.

A paraselene is an optical illusion caused by moonlight passing through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, according to the website Atmospheric Optics.

Bauer told Storyful it was very cold when she captured the halo.

“[The temperature] was -20 and the wind was at 30 mph,” she said. Credit: Carol Bauer via Storyful
