NOAA Satellite Captures Lightning During Severe Storms Across Texas, Southern States

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s GOES-16 satellite captured severe thunderstorms “erupting” over several southern states on May 3 and 4, including intense lightning in Texas.

“One particularly notable feature of these storms [in Texas] is that they formed along what is called a dry line, or a boundary that separates two air masses of different moisture content—one contains humid air while the other contains dry, dense air. Dry lines are often a key driver for severe thunderstorm formation, where they tend to form on the moisture-rich side of the line,” NOAA wrote.

GOES-16, or GOES East, also captured lightning flashes in storms spanning Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama on May 4, warning of “large hail and strong winds” as well as the possibility for tornadoes. Credit: NOAA Satellites via Storyful
