Residents of Sumas, Washington, were advised to shelter-in-place on Monday, November 29, as the Nooksack River spilled its banks and overflowed into parts of the city.

Officials with the City of Sumas, which is in Whatcom County, said the water level had bypassed the bridge on Monday morning but had begun to slowly subside throughout the afternoon.

As of Monday morning, most roads in and out of Sumas were closed, the city said. This footage shared by Henry Jay Mata shows flooding near the Cherry Street bridge. Credit: Henry Jay Mata via Storyful
