Officials said Premier Sihle Zikalala of KwaZulu-Natal was on hand on May 23 to inspect the “path of destruction” left behind by severe flooding north of Durban in the wake of heavy rain.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government said residents had to be evacuated after heavy rain caused damage to homes and infrastructure over the weekend.

The South African Weather Service had increased its warning status for the province to the highest level, with “widespread flooding” and damage expected.
