There were reports of injuries to protesters as hundreds gathered in Baghdad on Sunday, October 25, to mark the one-year anniversary of the 2019 anti-government protests.

Protesters gathered in Tahrir Square and surrounding areas to mark the anniversary, with clashes reported in the Allawi area of the city, on the opposite side of the river to Tahrir Square. Footage here shows protesters at the Ministry of Higher Education, a short distance east of Tahrir Square, and shows one protester being carried away after being injured on Al-Senak Bridge.

The largest protests since the fall of Saddam Hussein took place in Iraq in 2019, with protesters demanding improved services, better employment opportunities and an end to corruption.

Amnesty said in January that at least 600 people were killed in the protests, and it accused Iraqi security forces of undertaking a “lethal campaign of repression.” Credit: @news.tas via Storyful
