Record-Breaking Rainfall Floods Southwest Arkansas

Persistent heavy rain in southwest Arkansas led to flooding on Wednesday, August 12, forcing the evacuation of a retirement home, local media reported.

Texarkana Police shared photos of the ‘extreme’ flooding the city experienced Wednesday morning. A flash flood warning remained in effect throughout the afternoon.

NBC reported that Texarkana had received 6.77 inches of rain by Wednesday afternoon, smashing the previous record for highest August rainfall in a single day – 4.46 inches on August 31, 2004.

Jennifer Teeters, who shared these videos on Facebook, told Storyful she recorded them at 8.45 on Wednesday morning. “I was on my way to work and quickly realized I’d better turn right back around,” she said.

Teeters can be heard repeating a catchphrase used to remind drivers not to attempt to cross floodwaters: “Turn around, don’t drown!”

“I think I’m staying at E-Z Mart for a little while,” Teeters said in the video. Credit: Jennifer Teeters via Storyful
