Residents on Victoria’s French Island were urged to leave their homes on January 18 as an out-of-control bushfire tore through 85 hectares of national park.

Authorities said the fire was burning near Ridge Track and Mt Wellington Road. Fire trucks were reportedly being ferried to the island two at a time.

The Herald Sun reported there were fears for hundreds of protected and unique animals who live on the island.

An emergency warning that was issued on Saturday afternoon was downgraded to an advice warning just after 10pm. The island is home to about 100 people. Credit: Nicole Cullen via Storyful
