The Sacramento City Council has voted unanimously to name a skate park in the Californian city in honor of the late Tyre Nichols, who grew up in Sacramento and skated in the park.

Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, died in the hospital after he was beaten by officers in Memphis on January 7.

Nichols’s sisters gave short speeches on the naming of the Tyre Nichols Skate Park at the city council meeting, before the city council voted 9-0 for the naming of the park.

Nichols’s eldest sister, Keyana Dixon, said the park was where he "discovered the most beautiful parts of himself, where he met a lot of his lifelong friends, and where he picked up the joy of skateboarding.”

Local media reported Nichols moved from Sacramento to Memphis in 2020 to be closer to his mother.

Five former police officers accused in Nichols’s death – Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith and Desmond Mills Jr – have pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree murder and aggravated assault. Credit: City of Sacramento via Storyful
