Satellite images released on January 19 show Russian military activity at locations in western Russia, some near the Ukrainian border, as US President Joe Biden warned Russia about further invading Ukraine.

Biden said in a press conference on January 19 that he didn’t think Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted a “full-blown war”. However, Biden said he thought Putin would test NATO and the US and that Putin would ultimately regret it and pay a “serious and dear price for it”.

Maxar Technologies said these images were collected in December 2021 and January 2022 and that they show “key locations in western Russia where additional troops and ground forces equipment have recently been deployed.”

The sites seen in the images include Klimovo, which is roughly 13 km north of the Russia-Ukraine border; Klintsy, which is roughly 30 km east of the Russia-Ukraine border; Yelnya, about 130 km east of the Russia/Belarus border and the Pogonovo training area, which is 165 km northeast of Ukraine border.

In a statement issued on Wednesday night, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said: “If any Russian military forces move across the Ukrainian border, that’s a renewed invasion, and it will be met with a swift, severe, and united response from the United States and our Allies.” Credit: ©2022 Maxar Technologies via Storyful
